Charles A. Dukes Award

The Charles A. Dukes award was instituted in 1982 and named after the first director of the Duke Alumni Association, who built his reputation on his volunteer leadership. Since then, Duke has presented the award to nearly 300 longstanding volunteers who have served with distinction in leadership roles and gone beyond expectations to help Duke further its mission.

Each year, nominations are submitted by staff in the Alumni Affairs and University Development offices and approved by their respective boards. The winners are notified of their selection by the President in July. Nominators should describe in detail how their candidates have excelled in their volunteer position. To nominate a fellow alum, please fill out and submit the form found here.

For the fourth consecutive year, volunteers from Duke NY treated kids from the Dunlevy Milbank Center of the Children's Aid Society to an outing at the Westchester Golf Range in White Plains, NY.  On June 4th, the group traveled from NYC to the facility which is co-owned but Steve Quagliano, father of Mike Quagliano, former Duke men's golf team captain and current PGA touring pro.

The kids enjoyed basic golfing technique instruction from the golf range instructors follwed by a picnic lunch.  The event was a part of Duke NY's community service commitment to Dunlevy Milbank's Saturday morning Study Now - Play Later program where Duke alumns coordinate in-house and off-site activites on a monthly basis.

Remembering September 11, 2001

The Duke Alumni Association marks the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001 this weekend and remembers all those whose lives were taken, in particular the six Duke graduates:
J. Robinson “Rob” Lenoir ’84A. Todd Rancke ’81
Peter Ortale ’87Frederick C. Rimmele III M.D. ’94
Christopher Todd Pittman ’93Michael Morgan Taylor ’81
Our thoughts are with their families as we reflect on that terrible day. The DAA will acknowledge the anniversary of September 11 with a memorial in The Chronicle on Friday, by placing wreaths in front of Duke Chapel, and by participating in a special Chapel service on Sunday morning.

The university also has organized a series of programs and tributes related to September 11.

The Duke Alumni Association family grieves with alumni around the world as we remember the morning of September 11, 2001.

Mother's Day and Healthy Eating at Dunlevy Milbank on May 7th

We had a blast with the kids on May 7th, learning about healthy eating habits and making gifts for their Mom's!

We were really impressed by how knowledgeable the kids were and how engaged they were on the food pyramid quizzes and matching items to food groups.

They were really engaged and seemed to enjoy their morning with us.

Definitely doing this again next year!

Community Health & Fitness in Harlem on Sat, Apr 30, 2011

We did it!  Spring into Wellness was an incredible success and we couldn't have done it without you. A huge thanks to all our volunteers, who did such an amazing job, and another to the staff at our Dunlevy Milbank campus, who were instrumental in our success. We had over 170 volunteers including over 130 DAE volunteers (alumni, family and friends).  There were also 45 amazing volunteers from our partner organizations, including the Children's Aid Society, SUNY School of Optometry, Columbia School of Dentistry, and Harlem Hospital just to name a few.

We had such a great turn out from the surrounding area and so much to offer. The day was chalk full of activities for the children, including games of basketball, soccer and lacrosse, as well as a chance to learn how to build a healthy snack.  The adults took advantage of things like vision, dental and HIV screenings, as well as an introduction to yoga, healthy diet management tips and more.  This event was such a success, we are already thinking about next year - keep an eye out for details.

Community Health & Fitness in Harlem on Sat, Apr 30, 2011

Want to have a great day? Eat your breakfast! After eight hours of sleep your body is dehydrated and in need of fuel. Without breakfast you could wind up tired and cranky by 10am, and find yourself making a beeline for the infamous vending machine. Eat a simple, healthy breakfast and you are charged for the day - and immune to the call of the office doughnut box.

In just three more days (April 30th) we are going to be hosting our big Duke Alums Engage - NYC Community Health and Fitness Day.   This is where we will make available to adults and children in the Harlem community services such as basic medical testing, fitness classes, seminars about nutrition, and even healthy cooking classes to encourage the kinds of lifestyles that help people avoid diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc.  Come and be a part of this great community event and volunteer.

For more information, to volunteer, or to underwrite some of our costs, please contact Jack Boyd at 212-642-9256 (office) or 917-514-2282 (cell).

Community Health & Fitness in Harlem on Sat, Apr 30, 2011

Here's a tip - if you have trouble falling asleep, try some soothing sounds, like a recording of gentle rain.  Resist the urge to take a nap; napping can make insomnia worse.  If you really feel you have to shut your eyes for a bit, do so in the early afternoon and for no more than 30 minutes, or it could affect your sleep tonight.

We're only FOUR days away (April 30th) from our big Duke Alums Engage - NYC Community Health and Fitness Day.  So grab your friends and join us for this once-a-year way to give back to our community!  We still need:

  • At least 25 volunteers to help us serve 500+ people throughout the day in Central harlem
  • A photographer/videographer for the day
  • Additional volunteers to help with Friday night set-up starting at 7 PM at Dunlevy Milbank

Come down and volunteer.  You won't just share. You'll learn!

For more information, to volunteer, or to underwrite some of our costs, please contact Jack Boyd at 212-642-9256 (office) or 917-514-2282 (cell).

Community Health & Fitness in Harlem on Sat, Apr 30, 2011

Here's an interesting tidbit - smaller plate size is a great way to lose weight.  We tend to clean our plates, just like we were taught.  By switching our regular 12" plates for 10" plates at dinner time, we can reduce our intake by over 20%.  That means that the average adult can lose up to 18 pounds in one year, just by choosing to eat on a smaller plate!

Want to learn more?  In just five more days Duke Alumni Engage (DAE)  hosts our most ambitious event. Join us.  And you are always welcome to join us on Friday evening, April 29th at 7 PM to help with set-up.

For more information, to volunteer, or to underwrite some of our costs, please contact Jack Boyd at 212-642-9256 (office) or 917-514-2282 (cell).
