Duke to open federal relations office in April

This article is from the Chronicle, the Independent Daily at Duke University, and was written by, Joel
Luther.

Duke’s permanent office in the nation’s capital is scheduled to open by the end of the month.

The new office seeks to facilitate greater interactions with the federal government and Duke alumni, as well as provide academic programs for students, such as the Duke in D.C. program that will launch Spring 2013. The office will serve as a centralized hub for members of the Duke community who find themselves in D.C., said Landy Elliott, assistant director of the Office of Federal Relations at Duke.

On any given week, there’s a ton of Duke activity going on in Washington,” Elliott said. “The idea is that we have a sort of embassy, a point of first contact in the city, so that we can raise Duke’s visibility in the nation’s capital.”

Duke Community Embracing Twitter

The following aricle was written by  Margot Tuchler for "The Chronicle", the Independent Daily for Duke University.

Duke professors are trending on Twitter.

Members of the Duke community are increasingly relying on Twitter to communicate information about Duke and to promote and share their personal scholarship and research. Use of the site by Duke community members has risen noticeably in recent months, faculty and administrators said.

Mark Anthony Neal, professor of African and African American studies, opened an account at the insistence of former students. His account now has more than 11,000 followers. He operates on Twitter in a professional context, often as an extension of his work in the classroom, Neal said.

“Twitter is not for everyone, but for those folk who are interested in making their work accessible to a broader audience and to catch the attention of the many news producers who are seeking newsworthy stories on Twitter, it is a great platform,” Neal wrote in an email Thursday. “Folk in the academy are catching up to our students and others, who are way ahead of the digital curve, particularly as users.”

Daring Escape Leads Lemurs to School Library

An amusing article from Duke Today

DURHAM, N.C. - When the authorities arrived, the fugitives were lounging in the school library, stuffing themselves on a tropical fruit salad that the lunch lady had thoughtfully provided. A gaggle of admiring school girls stood around, snapping cell phone pictures from every angle and offering treats in their palms.

So ended the 36-hour adventure of Berisades and Ivy, a pair of 6-year-old ringtailed lemurs who daringly vaulted the electric fence of Natural Habitat Enclosure #4 at the Duke Lemur Center (DLC) late Saturday.

The first call came in to Duke Police from a neighbor of the Lemur Center who said she saw lemurs eating her neighbor's garden on Saturday night, but it was chalked up as a possible raccoon sighting. Then the two half-brothers failed to show up for brunch on Sunday morning, and the call went out to all Lemur Center staff to drop what they were doing and join the search.

This same pair had experienced a brief breakout the week before when a storm pushed over a tree, forming a bridge over the electric fence, said Greg Dye, Operations Manager of the Lemur Center. "We're still not sure how they did it this time, but let's just say that where there's a will, there must be a way."

The Duke Idea Interview: Former President Jimmy Carter on Crises and Contemporary Politics

Durham, NC - Contemporary political leaders often bemoan the complicated challenges they face, such as persistent high unemployment, uncertainty in the Middle East, China's increasing power and volatile oil prices. But former President Jimmy Carter offered some historic perspective Wednesday night in a talk for about 450 Duke Alumni and friends at Atlanta's Carter Center.

Carter took office in 1977 when the country still was reeling from a deep mistrust of public institutions following the Watergate scandal, ongoing fallout from the conflict in Vietnam, the threat of oil boycotts by Middle Eastern states, and, most daunting, the ceaseless threat of nuclear war.

The event was part of The Duke Idea, a series of conversations Brodhead moderates in cities around the world. Topics often focus on the public good, and guest speakers joining Brodhead have ranged from politicians and professors to physicians, athletes and business leaders.

Wildlife of Madagascar

Price: from $7,395 per person
Date: October 7, 2012 - October 25, 2012
Region: Africa
Activity Level: Strenuous

Brief Description

Join us for an adventure to experience the unique plants, animals, and culture on the exotic island of Madagascar – including many, many lemurs. The tour will travel from the central highlands to the east coast rainforests, and on to the varied dry habitats of the northern part of the country. Enjoy nature and nocturnal walks to see numerous species of wildlife, and relax on a beach in a private cove. The tour will be led by Duke Lemur Center conservation coordinator Charlie Welch, who lived and worked in Madagascar for 15 years.

Madagascar is one of the highest conservation priorities on the planet due to its high level of endemic biota, and the rapid rate at which much of that biota is unfortunately disappearing. A post-tour option will take some hardy participants to mountains of Marojejy National Park, in northeastern Madagascar. This is the site of a new conservation initiative by the Duke Lemur Center to help protect the forest of this stunning region through research and multifaceted projects with the local populations.
