With our 10th Reunion on the horizon, April 20-22, we are gathering our classmates who live in NY. Let's reconnect, celebrate our upcoming reunion, and find ways to re-engage with the university on the eve of our 10th Reunion.

This event is intended to both celebrate all that has been done by the Class of 2002 (volunteering and giving) as well as create an opportunity for alumni to re-engage with the university who have otherwise been disconnected.

Join fellow Duke alums and families in viewing the Blue Devils’ Men’s Basketball contest in Cameron Indoor Stadium against perennial rival Maryland Terrapins. Duke NY has reserved a private room at Westchester Burger with dedicated TV/sound system where alums and parents can enjoy the food/beverage menu of this popular regional establishment. Abundant free parking is available in the adjacent Washington Park Plaza shopping center. Also, various Duke souvenirs and paraphernalia will be available free of charge.

Duke Engage - How Can You Help? Volunteer!

We are working hard to make Duke Alums Engage NYC a success!  Will once again host a free Community Health and Fitness Day in Harlem on April 28, 2012. We need your help to make this year’s event an even bigger success.

What Is Duke Alums Engage?

Duke Alums Engage is a Duke Alumni Association initiative that integrates service-learning, civic engagement, and reflection while addressing societal needs in our communities.

What Is The Community Health And Fitness Day In Harlem?

The Community Health and Fitness Day in Harlem is a free event designed to encourage healthy lifestyles by providing medical screenings, wellness workshops, sports activities, and much more. In 2011, 131 Duke volunteers and 45 partners provided services to 370 children and adults; this year, we’d like to encourage even more people to join us.

One Way You Can Help!

Volunteer on the day of the event or at a pre-event planning activity
engage with kids as they participate in sports activities
lead a wellness workshop, cooking demonstration, or nutrition class
help with logistics (check-in, food, water, raffles, etc.)

Duke NY - NYC Hoops Watch vs. UNC

Few things will get us to leave the cozy warmth of our apartments during the dead of an NYC winter, but this is one of them! Join Duke NY and your fellow alums as we emerge from hibernation to gather and watch the Men's Basketball team take on UNC on Wednesday, February 8!

We will gather at 8:30 pm (tip-off is at 9:00 pm) at Brother Jimmy's Murray Hill for a half-hour of free well drinks and beer*, followed by drink and food specials throughout the game.

*In order to enjoy the half-hour of free well drinks and beer, you must get a wristband from the Duke NY check-in table downstairs, where we will hang out to watch the game (with sound).

Duke Engage - How Can You Help

As mentioned in a previous post, Duke Engage is rapidly approaching (April 28th).  There are so many ways to help make this day a success.  One of those ways is by donations.  If you, or someone you know, can donate a good/service for the event, that would be wonderful.  We are also in need of items for the gift bags and raffle.

Joint Happy Hour with MIT, Duke, Columbia & UPenn

If winter comes, can spring be far behind? Let's welcome the not far away spring with special drinks! Join MIT, Duke, Columbia, UPenn alumni at Taj Lounge on Tuesday, Feb 7, 6:30 - 9:30pm, with special 2-for-1 happy hour prices available until 8:00 pm.

Dodgeball Anyone?

For the past 10 years, ZogSports has been organizing co-ed, social sports leagues for “grownups” in NYC. This spring they are offering Touch Football, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling,Softball, Dodgeball and more. Get your friends together to form a full team, or register as an individual and get paired up with others who Zog. With organized happy hours after each game, you’ll feel like you’re back in college!

Join the ACC dodgeball team. Register as an individual for the Monday/Wednesday Dodgeball league in the casual division, and put “ACC” in the comments section to get placed on the team. ZogSports will place everyone that registers from the ACC on the same team. If there are not enough ACC alums to fill the team, they will add other Zoggers to the fill roster. Registration opens 2/13 for dodgeball.

Spring Registration – Opens on 2/1 for Football, Bowling, Softball, Hockey, Outdoor Soccer, and Cornhole and on 2/13 for all other leagues.

Wildlife of Madagascar

Brief Description

Join us for an adventure to experience the unique plants, animals, and culture on the exotic island of Madagascar – including many, many lemurs. The tour will travel from the central highlands to the east coast rainforests, and on to the varied dry habitats of the northern part of the country. Enjoy nature and nocturnal walks to see numerous species of wildlife, and relax on a beach in a private cove. The tour will be led by Duke Lemur Center conservation coordinator Charlie Welch, who lived and worked in Madagascar for 15 years.

Madagascar is one of the highest conservation priorities on the planet due to its high level of endemic biota, and the rapid rate at which much of that biota is unfortunately disappearing. A post-tour option will take some hardy participants to mountains of Marojejy National Park, in northeastern Madagascar. This is the site of a new conservation initiative by the Duke Lemur Center to help protect the forest of this stunning region through research and multifaceted projects with the local populations.

Duke NY - Study Now-Play Later with Dunlevy Milbank

Help keep kids off the street with this academic and athletic Saturday program in Harlem! Join Duke NY on Saturday, February 4, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (and the first Saturday of every month) at Dunlevy Milbank Center, located at 118th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues, as we volunteer with the 7-11 year olds of Study Now-Play Later, a program designed to make learning and activities fun and motivating.

This month, volunteers will help the kids design Valentine's crafts and we will also build some toy airplanes in celebration of the Tuskegee Airmen. After the morning session, volunteers are invited to join Duke NY for a local lunch in the neighborhood.
